Poppy plant ( Papaver somniferum) is from Papaveraceae family. It is one of the earliest plant cultivated by men since ancient times. Today it is cultivated in the regions of Aegean and Mediterranean of Turkey.


The cultivation area is registered officially and controlled strictly by Turkish Grain Board. Poppies are in full bloom late spring to early summer. Harvesting begins in the second half of July.  Its capsule is bought only by Official Authorities for alkaloids purpose in medicine.Only the seeds blue - white and yellow coloured are traded freely all over the world.

 

The cultivation area is registered officially and controlled strictly by Turkish Grain Board. The cultivation of poppy  is being realized under control and legally grown  in Turkey as per the requirement of International Control Bureau.


The seed is very small 1 mm round shape with nutty and pleasant taste. Poppyseeds contain 40 to 50 % fatty oil which is consumed in dishes in Anatolia.

Poppy oil is often used as cooking oil and salad dressing oil.

 

Seeds are sifted and traded with 99.9 %  purity. Poppy seeds are rich in oil, carbohydrates, calcium and protein.

 

Blue coloured seeds are demanded and used  mostly by Central and East European countries and American countries but white coloured seeds by Scandinavian countries and India.

       Shelf Life    : 24 months when stored in cool and dry conditions.

       Packing is either 25 kg. paper bags or 50 kg. gunny bags.
